Cannes 2024: UK films and co-productions
Cannes Film Festival returns to the Riviera from 14 - 25 May, and the 77th edition of the festival features another strong showing for the UK. 12 UK works feature across the selection including the world premieres of eight feature films.
Andrea Arnold’s Bird (starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski) will screen in competition on Thursday 16 May marking the filmmakers fifth feature film to premiere at the Festival. In competition are two UK-US co-productions; Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest work Kinds of Kindness (starring Emma Stone) and Coralie Fargeat's The Substance.
Three UK co-productions feature in Un Certain Regard; Sandhya Suri’s Santosh, Ariane Labed’s September Says and Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl.
Screening in the Directors’ Fortnight are Sister Midnight from writer-director Karan Kandhari and To A Land Unknown, a co-production between UK, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Greece, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Palestine.
Bird, Santosh and Sister Midnight are all by the BFI National Lottery Filmmaking Fund whilst September Says has been supported by the UK Global Screen Fund managed by the BFI on behalf of the DCMS.
In the Immersive Selection the UK will be showing Evolver (voiced by Cate Blanchett) and Maya: The Birth of a Superhero and out of competition will be showing Missing Pictures: Naomi Kawase and Notes On Blindness.
